What to Do Before the Carpet Cleaners Arrive: A 30-Minute Checklist

Booked a carpet cleaning? Thirty minutes of prep the night before gets you a noticeably better result — and on quotes that charge for furniture moving or time on site, it can trim the bill too. Here's the checklist local pros wish every customer followed.
The Night Before
- Clear the small stuff: lamps, plants, toys, floor baskets, pet bowls, cords. Pros move sofas; they shouldn't be handling your breakables.
- Vacuum if you can. Some companies include pre-vacuuming, some don't. Removing dry surface soil first lets the hot-water extraction work on what's deep in the pile.
- Note your problem spots. Walk the rooms and flag every stain you care about — and be honest about what caused them. "Red wine, last month" gets treated correctly; a mystery spot gets a generic treatment.
- Decide about closets. Cleaning closet floors is often the same visit but only if they're empty — a Minnesota-relevant tip since that's where winter boots drip all season.
The Morning Of
- Clear a parking spot close to the door — truck-mounted equipment runs hoses from the vehicle, and in winter that matters double.
- Plan for pets: a closed room, the yard, or a neighbor. Machines are loud, doors stay open, and enzyme treatments need to sit undisturbed.
- Ask about your walk-on time. Standard drying is 6–12 hours; fast-dry setups get carpets walkable the same evening. Socks are fine on damp carpet, shoes are not.
What NOT to Do
- Don't pre-treat stains with store products right before the visit — some products chemically set stains or react with professional solutions. Tell the pro instead.
- Don't soak pet accidents in anything — point them out and let the enzyme treatment work.
- Don't move the big furniture yourself unless the quote assumes it. Know what's included before you throw out your back.
After the Cleaners Leave
- Run ceiling fans or a box fan; in humid Minnesota summers, run the AC or a dehumidifier too.
- Leave the foam blocks or foil under furniture legs until everything's fully dry — they prevent rust and wood-stain transfer.
- Save your receipt, especially for rentals — see our move-out deposit guide.
